The Concept of Virtue from an Evolving Perspective

Abstract:

The results of the scientific interest in the concept of virtue presents a vast theoretical panorama extended in time and space. In antiquity as well as in the Age of Enlightenment, the notion of virtue is at the center of the concerns of philosophers, writers and artists. Both proponents of experimental rationalism and apologists of revealed religion agree that virtue is the foundation of morality. But beyond this initial statement, long and fierce debates focus on the nature of virtue, on who practices it best and on the role of science and of the Church in the discernment of morality in general, and of its virtuous foundations in particular. This rich theoretical tradition continues, more or less intensively, during the following centuries, and one notes a renewed interest in the notion of virtue after the Second World War when there is a revival of the virtue ethics, in particular of Aristotelian inspiration. This article aims to highlight certain theoretical landmarks in the conceptual perception of virtue at different times, emphasizing the importance of the diachronic approach in this matter.
