The present article tries to attack the problem of slang from several perspectives – semiotic, linguistic, textual, in order to reveal the current dimensions of this rather complex and fertile semiotic subsystem of the contemporary French language, starting with the history of its emergence, its evolution and the secret springs of its cryptology and ending with its current trends. Does slang remain as esoteric a subsystem as it was originally conceived, or are there mutations taking place that would reduce the original differences? These current concerns deserve to be discussed in the hope of bringing more clarity or opening other horizons (why not other issues?) of research in this area.
